Q

What is IUI?

ivfIUI also known as intrauterine insemination, is an infertility treatment where washed sample of semen is placed directly into the uterine cavity at the time of rupture of follicle.

Q

When is IUI Recommended?

It is a common fertility treatment and usually the first infertility procedure the couple will seek.

The main causes where we advise IUI are:-

  • Ejaculatory dysfunction.
  • Male sub fertility.
  • Unexplained infertility.
  • Anatomical defects.
  • Cervical factors.
  • Immunological factors.
Q

What is the process of IUI?

The female partner is usually given medications used for ovulation induction. This definitely increases the success rate of IUI. Insemination timing is very crucial. It should coincide with ovulation i.e release of eggs.

Semen sample is given by husband by masturbation. This can be collected at home in a sterile container (If you live within the vicinity of clinic) or in clinic’s semen collection room.

All the samples and disposables are properly labelled.

The semen sample is then processed in the IUI lab. In the process of semen washing or process we use various Media and methods are used to separate motile sperms from other components of semen

  • Double Density Technique Here active sperms are collected after filtering the semen through various density gradients.

  • Swim-up Technique In this after removing the seminal plasma, active sperm are allowed to swim up to culture medium with their own inherent motility.

Now the prepared sample of highly motile sperms is placed in the center of uterine cavity through a sterile, soft catheter.

Q

Is IUI painful ?

iuiIf done properly and the patient is relaxed, then IUI is just like a routine gynae examination.

Q

How much rest is required after IUI ?

At Reviva we make you rest at the IUI table for few minutes, but according to the various studies the time of rest has no relation with success rate of IUI.

As the sample is placed directly into the uterine cavity. It will not flow out even if you stand immediately after IUI.

Q

What is the success rate of IUI?

The success rate of IUI is approximately 10-15%. It may be slightly more in certain group with favorable factors. Various factors which may effect the success rate are :-

Age of female is most important, success rate decreases after 35 years, falls dramatically after 40 years.

Ovarian stimulation with injectable (Gonadotrophins) results in slightly higher pregnant rates as compare to natural cycle and clomiphene cycle.

Q

Timing of IUI

And last but the prime prognostic factor is the semen parameters. The count motility, and percentage of normal morphology are most important determinant.

Q

What precautions are to be taken after IUI?

No precautions regarding food or activity are required after IUI.

Q

How many cycles of IUI can be tried before going to IVf?

There is no strict number for this. But on an average we can try four cycles of IUI. If female age is > then 40 years the ovarian reserve is low or any other contributing cause of infertility than consider IVF earlier.

Q

What is minimum number of total motile sperms required for IUI?

Best results are obtained when the number of motile sperms in semen is above the threshold of approximately 10 million.

Q

How many IUI‘s are required in a cycle single insemination or double insemination?

There is no documented advantages of double insemination over single insemination if the follicle has not ruptured by the time of 1st IUI then we may go for 2nd IUI after rupture.
